Supervision Considerations in Working with Grieving Families

Dr. Charles Cole, LMFT

October 30th 10a-12p (virtual event)

Grieving families experience grief in different ways. Often when working with the family system this could be a challenge for family therapists. In this session, a composite case study will be used to illustrate the process and the points on how therapists and supervisors craft the intervention to meet the needs of the client. Co-therapy can provide grieving families with the support of two clinicians who offer complementary perspectives while maintaining a consistent treatment plan. Clear communication and role definition between co-therapists are essential to prevent mixed messages and to respond sensitively to each family member’s way of grieving. Regular consultation allows the co-therapy team to coordinate interventions, monitor family dynamics, and support one another when the emotional intensity of grief affects the therapeutic process.

Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7912.
