“It is important to safeguard the historic essence of our profession while at the same time striving to find creative, bold, innovative ideas to advance the profession and to increase membership across the state.”

Scott A. Shelby, Ph.D. received his doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LA # 1117), a Clinical member of AAMFT, an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LA #3515). Dr. Shelby is the clinical director at his private agency, Family Solutions Counseling Center, in Monroe, LA. He provides clinical services to individuals, couples and families. His expertise is in marriage/couple relationship problems, parent/child difficulties, depression, adjustment to difficult transitions in life and divorce counseling for parents and children. Dr. Shelby also is the Executive Director for the non-profit agency, Family Solutions Resource Center, Inc., which provides advocacy, education and mental health counseling to children and families in Northeast Louisiana.

Shelby’s work in his private practice in the Monroe region has shown him the need for and appreciation of marriage and family therapy. His experience with families fuels his passion to inform the public on the usefulness of marriage and family therapy and to encourage other mental health providers to consider becoming licensed MFTs.

Dr. Shelby has experience working on the LAMFT board member as both elections committee chairman and President Elect as well as being directly involved in MFT legislation and the development of clinical workshops.

Dr. Shelby’s goals are to advocate for LMFTs to continue to be recognized as providers for third party reimbursements including insurance companies, Employee Assistant Programs and government agencies. He plans to focus on building a stronger, larger, and more effective organization that will provide greater support to MFTs in their work on a day-to-day basis. Other goals are to make marriage and family therapy a better known profession and to increase awareness and knowledge about Marriage and Family Therapy as a profession, along with the advantages of an interactional perspective to students, mental health professionals, schools, and communities.

Dr. Shelby has been married to his wife Brienne for over 10 years and they have two daughters, Amanda and Abbey.
